Bright Ideas for Treating the Winter Blues December 1,2009 Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, causes depression, lethargy, irritability and a desire to avoid social situations. It can also create an urge to overeat, particularly carbohydrates. A 1999 study at John Hopkins University Medical Center administered a big dose of vitamin D-3 to eight SAD patients... "to my surprise, every single person who got vitamin D improved," says lead investigator Michael Gloth, a geriatrician at John Hopkins, who continues the high-dosage treatment for his SAD patients today. "There's compelling evidence that if you are deficient, taking more vitamin D can be very very helpful," says Dr. Gloth.
"Millions" of Children Deficient in Vitamin D
PEDIATRICS (doi:10.1542/peds.2009-0051) August 3, 2009 About 70 percent of U.S. children have low levels of vitamin D, which puts them at higher risk for bone and heart disease, researchers said today. "We expected the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency would be high, but the magnitude of the problem nationwide was shocking," said Dr. Juhi Kumar of Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center. Cases of rickets, a bone disease in infants caused by low vitamin D levels, have also been increasing, other research shows. The new finding, from a nationwide study, adds to growing evidence that children as well as many adults also lack the vitamin. |
Most Americans are Lacking Vitamin D Archives of Internal Medicine April 2009 Three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, the so-called "sunshine vitamin" whose deficits are increasingly blamed for everything from cancer and heart disease to diabetes, according to new research. Between 1988 and 1994, 45 percent of 18,883 people (who were examined as part of the federal government's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) had 30 nanograms per milliliter or more of Vitamin D. A decade later, just 23 percent of 13,369 of those surveyed had at least that amount. |
